Pressure VS. Stress

Volcanic Eruption

We all need pressure in order to thrive and most importantly we cannot avoid it; whether it is caused due to scaling your business, having little cash flow, or getting an unexecpted wave of new clients, everything causes pressure. However, we must learn to see pressure as a positive, we need it otherwise we would just walk around in a blob-like state not engaging in anything.

Even in nature we see pressure as a driving force, a plant cannot exist if the roots do not create pressure to push upwards and lead the plant into the sun. Pressure also proves positive in engineering, take a car, it is the pressure of ‘mini-explosion’ in the engine, which gives the car the ability to turn on and go. Pressure in your business is also needed it  forces innovation to find better solutions or create a better route to market.

At the moment we all feeling the pressure of the economic changes and even though it is having negative consequences it is also giving existing  businesses a reason to analyse their weakness, it is moving graduates into enterprise, and its making the government look inward for solutions.  These pressures will create better businesses, younger entrepreneurs, and will lead us to a new path of innovation and economic independence. Outcomes that in the ‘good-times’ would not have come about, because there was little pressure to create change.

So why do we spend so much time trying to avoid it? We have created a negative association between pressure and stress. Stress releases epinephrine, commonly known adrenaline, which then sets off a chain of reactions in our body to engage our flight or fight reflexes. In doing so, our cognitive reasoning is almost turned off as the body thinks it needs action not thinking. If we were hunting buffalo, the adrenaline would be incredibly useful, however in business it gets in the way of thinking. Stress of also causes other problems such as heart disease, insomnia, headaches, and so on.

Avoiding Stress

1. Set a realistic time-line and focus on big results rather than a long ‘to-do’ list

2. Exercise and drink a lot of fluids to release toxins, which can trigger stress.

3. Stay reactive and don’t get agitated planning and figuring out the future, we cannot control it.

4. Focus on solutions as we can control them rather than problems, which we have little control over

5.  Breath from your lower belly as breathing from your chest begins to set mechanisms for agitation and panic. One easy trick is to put a pen in your mouth it unclenched the jaw and forces you to breath deeply, instantly relaxing you.

6. Relish pressure, once you invite it and see it as a positive, it doesn’t cause stress, but productivity and innovation.

About THECUBE Coworking Space

We are a coworking and innovation space in Shoreditch, East London. We offer a physical space for entrepreneurs to work as well as innovation tools through our agency called Idea Engineering. There are many other aspects to business than plans and financial forecasts, which can also contribute to business failure or success. Every week we explore different topics to give our members a 360 view to business life.

New York New York

apg_nyc_080418_ssh

THECUBE went across the pond to look at some spaces, meet people, and generally observe the enterprise sector of NYC. We have been amazed by how open and willing people have been to speak about their experience post financial crash as well as what they are doing to make things different. There was a resounding sense urgency and a recognition that there has been a permanent change in the way people do business in NYC.

We also observed the contrasts between NYC and London, which we feel are incredibly complimentary. For instance, London entrepreneurs value ideas more and are more patient in growing their idea at an organic pace. The ideas are imediate and need little investment, which is a positive as they are reaching economic stability quicker due to low overheads and simple implementation processes. In contrast NYC entreprenuers are launching business rockets, which is great for momentum and striking gold, however it does mean more scraped knees. These rockest are expensive and they need venture capatilism, staffing, and resources, which means that they will be able to provide a great contrast to ideas being developed in THECUBE space in London.

It will be really interesting to see how the two cities collaborate and learn from each other. Our next step is to protoype the space in November by creating a pop-up version, showcasing Idea Engineering and the talent of our members. If you have ideas or would like to get involved, please get in touch.

The Sustainability of Coworking Spaces

DSC_0549

There are many things that play a role in creating a good work space and making it viable. The steps below were devised for THECUBE using Idea Engineering, which has helped us reach profit in less than a year. We hope will help budding coworking owners as well as help define this emerging industry.

Keep Overheads Low to Create Fast Economy

Many spaces are portraying a luxurious or high-end feel and hiking up start-up costs above potential income, thus creating a longer return cycle. It is important to keep overheads as low as possible; negotiate good deals on your leases, invest in durable furnishings rather than overpriced luxury items, find a space that has little to no refurbishment needs, and look at a well connected but up and coming area as rents will be cheaper.

Marketing Position

Position your space away from members clubs, cafés, or luxury offices, so you don’t have to compete in a saturated market.

Delay the Bells & Whistles

When cash flow increases and you have broken even, then start to replace standard items with more defined products. Firstly, its good for your start-up costs, but it also communicates to your members that you are improving the space, which creates retention.

Streamline Running Costs

Create a circular economy that is lucrative to enlist quality people to help run the space, automate systems where possible, and have a small core team that is cross trained.

Stay Green

Turning off lights that are not in use and at closing time, recycling paper to create note-pads, encouraging members to think before they print, use tap water instead of buying bottled, etc. etc. Being green is responsible and can help you save money along the way.

Define Your Ethos

Find what it is that will make your coworking special and relevant to local entrepreneurs. Spend time observing and take note of what is needed. To simply set up a couple of desks in one space is not coworking, you can do that at Starbucks.

Offer Innovative Information & Events

Give your members well researched information they cannot find anywhere else and create events that are pushing innovation amongst entrepreneurs.

Bring in the Community

If you want to be around for awhile get the community behind you and create events that will encourage people to come to your space. They may not need you now but may in the future. THECUBE constantly invites the community to partake in our events and we have seen a great return on investment. Some people don’t join until 3 -6months down the line, so be patient. I will stress that you do it out of genuine interest not just for sales purposes.

Do not Franchise

According to our observations, franchising dilutes coworking spaces and makes them generic. Coworking spaces are so dependent on their community and the needs of local entrepreneurs that creating a generic space will make them vulnerable. Plus each space has to continue to change and innovate as needed, which is contrary to franchise protocol.

Is it Better or Worse to Have More Than One Project on the Go?

juggling_colorized

There are different schools of thought on concentration and whether its better to have one thing on your plate or several. We believe that having more than one project on the go at once, will actually increase productivity and focus, below are the reasons why.

1. It breaks down established patterns the brain creates when it focuses on one task for too long

2. You obsesses less about the little things as there is less time

3. Make less mistakes as you learn to trust your first instinct again due to having less time to focus on one point

4.  According to an article in the RSA journal, author John Kay says micro-management of goals ‘fails because complex goals are rarely best achieved by detailed planning  based on define and quantifiable objectives.’  Thus focusing on more than one project will allow you to be reactive and let the goals drive themselves.

5. Become better at time management weeding out what is and is not important. Its easy to create thousands of superfluous tasks when focusing on one project, however when your plate is full you soon realise that many of these tasks are simply unnecessary or transferable.

About THECUBE Coworking Space

workspace3

Coworking at THECUBE is affordable. flexible, and straight forward. Potential members to THECUBE have a choice of 5 main tiers from which to design the most suitable work-plan.

Who is at THECUBE?
THECUBE members are curious, innovative, and driven by need to create great ideas. We believe in diversity and have attracted entrepreneurs and idea makers from across all different industries. We have film makers, PR firms, financial consultants, accountants, printers, architects, fashion, creative agencies, software developers, web developers, and graphic designers.

Why Join  THECUBE?
There are many reasons, the more practical being that you need a place that will conduce concentration and productivity, a place to meet with clients, or place to showcase your work, and then there the more qualitative reasons like meeting future collaborators, clients or finding a source of inspiration, or shooting the breeze with like minded people.
In general people like coming to THECUBE, because it helps keep positivity up. Being social and being around like minded people raises dopamine levels, which means that ideas are easier to create and implement.

What is like to have office space at THECUBE?

People always comment about how relaxed the space is, we are all here to achieve goals, however the minimalistic design calms people, which means they are able to concentrate a lot more.
Since we have people from across different industries and different age groups, everyone is quit curious to learn from each other, so it feels more like a collaborative space than a rigid office space.

Other Serives at THECUBE

THECUBE also offers virtual office services, meeting room hire, boardroom hire, gallery space, and in house consultancy firm called Idea Engineering

Designer Matthew Miller Joins THECUBE

matthew miller

THECUBE will be sponsoring young British fashion designer Matthew Miller by providing him with both workspace and Idea Engineering consultancy. Matthew graduated from the Royal College of Art and has been included in the reputed MAN show, which is produced by Lulu Kennedy from Fashion East.

This is the first time our coworking space has offered sponsorship, the reason we complied was due to his motivation to ask, his design innovation, and his growing reputation in the fashion world (he was voted by VOUGE as the top 20 graduates to watch).

He also has that intangible je ne sais quoi in his manner that convinces your gut that he is something special. His combination of his design talent and clear understanding of the fashion business is rare and THECUBE team is intrigued and excited to help him along his journey.

For further information and more detail on Matthew Miller’s designs, please see the link
